“I Love Taking Care of People”: Nursing Career Crosses Borders

As a child in Liberia, Yatta Warner of Radius Specialty Hospital in Boston, admired nurses in their uniforms, who were providing care to her mother and others. Yatta helped out with taking care of her mother also, and began to realize that nursing would be the career for her.

After completing a four-year Registered Nurse program in her native country, Yatta was granted a Diversity Visa and immigrated to the United States in 2004. Once here, she faced a new challenge: getting her nursing knowledge recognized in this new arena. She knew that she’d have to take more courses to become aligned with nursing practice in the United States. So, Yatta set a plan of action for herself: she entered and completed the Licensed Practical Nurse Program at MassBay Community College.

“I love taking care of people,” Yatta says. “I knew that it would be tough and that I’d have to make adjustments, but it’s worth it. It was so different from when I went to school before, because this time I was working also and that made it more difficult. But, I liked the challenge. Now that I’ve finished, I already miss school.”

Yatta believes that it’s never too late too go to school, saying, “You just have to take the first bold step and go. Just remember, nothing is easy, but if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. And, it’s really helpful to have support from the Training Fund to do it.”
