Eola ByrdGeorgeTown University Hospital / Housekeeper / DC
In February 2006, Eola Byrd was terminated from her job of five years as a housekeeper at Georgetown University Hospital because she had filed a complaint against a shift supervisor who made an inappropriate remark in front of a co-worker and herself. "I thought his behavior was unbecoming for a supervisor," Eola says, "so I decided to file a complaint through the Union. Management requested that I make a written statement explaining what was said."
She was terminated because of the complaint. The co-worker who witnessed the incident became afraid and would not support Eola. "I was unemployed for 13 months and human resources refused to give me my job back," she says. "The Union got involved and took on my case. With determination and hard work as well as the grace of God, I got my job back and now I'm working again. "The Union works for the members and not only did I get my job back but I was reinstated with all my benefits intact - vacation time, sick time, health insurance, and pension. "I would like to thank God, my Union reps, my organizer and the leadership of 1199SEIU who authorized my case to be moved forward. "This is a powerful union and I am glad to be a part of it. Just in case I forgot to mention it, I am now holding the prestigious position of a delegate!"
