On Tuesday, the voters of Ohio voted 2-1 to give collective bargaining back to public workers, rejecting the Governor’s attempt to break the unions. In Arizona, the voters recalled the rightwing state Senate leader who led the fight to impose apartheid-like immigration laws on the people of that state. In Mississippi, the voters rejected the so-called “personhood” referendum which would define an embryo as a person and ban abortion rights, even in cases of rape and incest. In Maine, the voters affirmed that state’s law that allows voter registration on election day, thereby making it easier for citizens to vote. All across the country, a number of Tea Party-backed rightwing office-seekers were turned back. What lessons might current holders and voters draw from Tuesday’s results as we move toward the 2012 presidential and congressional elections?
