iSpeak: Remembering Senator Ted Kennedy

With the death of Senator Ted Kennedy, 1199SEIU lost a good friend and American working people lost their greatest advocate in Congress. For nearly half a century, he led the fight for quality healthcare for all, as well as for worker safety, labor’s right to organize, civil rights, public schools and quality education, Social Security and Medicare, and immigration rights. A fierce opponent of the war in Iraq, he also led the fight in Congress against US support for dictatorships abroad, as in South Africa under apartheid and Chile under military rule. Tens of millions of us have been positively affected by the 1,000 pieces of legislation he got passed.

How have you been affected by the loss of Senator Kennedy?

Ted Kennedy was a very great advocate for the people. He fought very hard for the people.I feel we lost a great person. Losing Ted Kennendy in Congress is a great loss to the people of the united states.Ted Kennendy fought for health care and for labor's right to organize and many many more issues in the congress.

The voice of the tiger is not there any more and he will be greatly missed. As a little girl, my parents always talk to me about the Kennedy family. As I got older and involved in politics, I grew to love what Ted stood for. I remember when he came to Baltimore in 2007 for the SEIU Healthcare convention. I took lots of pictures. I feel like I lost someone great and dear to me.
