iSpeak: Sean Bell

Two weeks ago, three NYC police officers were acquitted of all charges in the killing of Sean Bell and the wounding of two companions the night before Bell was to be married. The police fired 51 bullets into a car carrying the three men, who were unarmed. The killing reminded New Yorkers of the death of Amidou Diallo, also unarmed, who was killed by four policemen firing 40 bullets. Young black men are almost exclusively the victims of such police killings, not only in New York but also New Orleans, Los Angeles, Washington DC and other major cities, while the police are nearly always exonerated.

What can be done to stop this? What should be our response to the Sean Bell verdict?

I don’t understand why someone in the first place needs to be shot 50 times. That’s not right but more violence won’t help either
I am so sorry for the family. That could happen to anyone.

Why is the first response always with lethal force? Police departments have tasers, tear gas, pepper spray, bean bag guns, rubber bullets, and who knows what else?
Maybe better training? Maybe the Barney Fife model of one bullet? That way they'd really stop and think before they fired.

We should do nothing. It’s not the place for 1199 to get involved in this. Stay out of it.

The union should organize a rally against this injustice. The people who make up 1199 are mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, etc. Sean Bell could be any one of us and could've been related to any one of us. In order to make sure that an injustice like this does not happen again, we need to show our support for one another and for humanity and call for a change and for justice. 1199 has enough power and voices to bring about change!

This is a travesty of justice that was, in my opinion, largely caused by the elimination of a community jury in the adjudication process, in favor of a bench trial, at the defense' request. I predict that down the road, a civil jury will award Mr. Bell's survivors a multi-million dollar compensation award -which will prove what we already know - that the officers' behavior was indeed misconduct. These have been the criminal and civil outcomes of every other recent well-publicized case of fatal shootings or injuries committed by (primarily Caucasian) NYPD officers against African-American men.

This is very simple. If you see something, do something. The black community in the United States does not have to give up seats in public transportation to white men any more, but they can be assassinated by a police officer in the streets of U.S.A

I think we should march on the Justice Department again. I was there with Rev Al Sharpton. It was amazing to see the faces of the people coming out of that department as we marched. It can be a bigger march this time. It's about human rights: no person regardless of color should be killed in that manner. Let's purple up and send a clear message to the Justice Dept we are watching and speaking out for our citizens.

We need to really start forums to help us organize and strategize and hold our elected officials responsible and put these issues on the table when they're campaigning for elections. I'm sorry, but I'm tired of marching and chanting. That worked in the 60's but these are different times. One thing I've been practicing for a few weeks is, I'm not shopping and neither is my 14-year-old daughter. It's difficult for her since spring is here, but I'm teaching her a great lesson-No Justice, No Shopping!

I think the Supreme Court should take a look at this case and convict those cops of hate crimes and murder. You can't stop hate crimes if you don't punish the offenders when there is solid evidence that the offenders are guilty. The cops firing 51 bullets and the victims that never brandished a weapon---hmmmm, sounds like a hate crime and murder to me.

As long as people are allowed to "get away with it" and certain groups have officials wrapped around their finger, they will continue to do what they please, including bending the law to satisfy the immediate need. America is supposed to be a multi-cultural nation, why can't we act civilized to each
other? We are all the same in God’s eyes.

This is a serious concern for parents, especially in those big cities where human rights do not include rights for young black males. The entire police force should be revamped, from the police commissioner to the patrol police officers since recruiters are neither screened thoroughly nor trained properly. The goal in this kind of situation is to shoot to disarm the suspect but not to kill at first sight.

I think police in NY are trained to kill black people regardless of they situation. Take the black high-ranking chief that almost got blown away with his ID hanging from his neck. I am sick and tired of the non-violet approach to licensed killers. They choose that position just to get away with killing us legally. If we don't change it, it will remain the same.

I believe we should unite, march and force Washington to open its eyes. This racial profiling has gone on long enough. It is time to take a stand for justice.
