iSpeak: Recruiting More Youth

How can our Union recruit more young members to become Delegates, and to move into the leadership of 1199SEIU?

For one, you can give them a monthly stipend and then hold them accountable for the job they are being paid for. You can also make them attend a weekly, biweekly or monthly meeting to keep them current as to what issues the union may or may not need to take action. If union reps were paid as well as being held accountable for what they have been elected to do, then there is no reason they should not be informed of different events and goings on within the union.

It was extremely aggravating having to keep asking what was the state of the negotiations and even afterwards about the agreement. it was ridiculous the dearth of information that was available. Do these reps undergo training? Are they taught how to deal with certain situations? If you empower the reps with information, training and pay them a monthly stipend, then you can hold them accountable. That’s just my opinion because I was really upset about how little some of these reps and other union employees know or even to a larger extent care.
