In the wake of Wednesday’s court ruling blocking part of Arizona’s apartheid-like anti-immigration law, momentum is building for a major rally at Citi Field on Friday, July 30, in support of comprehensive immigration reform. 1199SEIU is joining with SEIU Local 32BJ, other labor unions, immigration rights groups and civil rights organizations at the NY Mets stadium at 6 pm on July 30th, when the Arizona Diamondbacks come to New York to play the Mets.

Lynn, MA Hospital Workers Wage Fight for First Contract

After more than a year of negotiations without a contract, hundreds of workers at Union Hospital and citizens from across the region rallied yesterday asking management at Union Hospital/Partners Healthcare to keep good jobs and quality care on the North Shore of Massachusetts. North Shore Medical Center is operated by Partners HealthCare System, Inc, the largest healthcare system in Massachusetts with more than $5.2 billion in reserves.

iSpeak: The Sherrod Scandal

After a rightwing blogger and Fox News posted a distorted clip of her speech to the NAACP, Department of Agriculture staffer Shirley Sherrod was instantly fired by the government, a move supported by the White House and the NAACP. But Sherrod, a longtime civil rights activist, actually said the opposite of what the rightwing clip showed--in fact, she spoke of the need to help poor farmers, regardless of their color. Embarrassed, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and President Obama apologized, as did the NAACP. Shirley Sherrod was offered her job back (an offer she's considering) and Fox News invited her for an interview (she refused). Who would you say is responsible for the scandal?
